Y'hoshua Ben Y'hovah
Y’hoshua the Son of Y’hovah
“Your word is a lamp for my foot and light on my path.”
— Tehillim (Psalm) 119:105, CJB
The Eternal Connection Between the Word and Light
David, the shepherd-king of Yisra’el, understood that the Word of Y’hovah was not merely a written scroll or a set of commands—it was living light. He declared with reverent awe, “Your word is a lamp for my foot and light on my path” (Tehillim [Psalms] 119:105, CJB). The Word of Y’hovah, when hidden in the heart, becomes the constant guide for a man’s mind, the illumination of his way, and the very fire that purifies his soul.
His son Shlomo (Solomon), filled with wisdom from above, confirmed this truth, saying:
“For the command is a lamp, and the Torah a light, and reproofs of discipline a way of life.”
— Mishlei (Proverbs) 6:23, TS2009
The Torah, originating from the heavenly throne, is pure light. It enlightens those who walk in it, while the commandments act as lamps that kindle from that divine light, directing one in every step toward righteousness. This pairing of lamp and light, command and Torah, foreshadows a deeper mystery—one revealed in Y’hoshua HaMashiach, the Living Word who walked among us.
The Word Made Flesh — Y’hoshua as the Radiance of Y’hovah
The emissary Yochanan (John) unveils this eternal mystery in the opening of his Besorah:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... The Word became a human being and lived with us, and we saw His Sh’khinah, the Sh’khinah of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.”
— Yochanan (John) 1:1, 14, CJB
Here we see that the same Word which David called a “lamp” and Shlomo a “light” is none other than Y’hoshua Himself. The light that shone on Sinai now radiates in the person of HaMashiach. He is not a created light, but the eternal radiance of Y’hovah’s own being—the visible manifestation of the invisible Elohim.
Thus, when Y’hoshua declared, “I am the light of the world; whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light which gives life” (Yochanan [John] 8:12, CJB; cf. 9:5), He revealed that He is the Living Torah, the embodiment of the Word that guided Avraham, Mosheh, and all the prophets. His light is the same divine illumination that brought creation into existence in Berĕshith (Genesis) 1:3, when Y’hovah said, “Let there be light.”
The Divine Sonship: Y’hoshua Ben Y’hovah
To call Y’hoshua Ben Y’hovah—the Son of Y’hovah—is not to suggest a separation within the Divine, but to affirm that the Father’s essence is fully revealed in the Son. As it is written, “This Son is the radiance of the Sh’khinah, the very expression of God’s essence, upholding all that exists by His powerful word” (Ivrim [Hebrews] 1:3, CJB).
In Hebraic thought, a “son” bears the nature and purpose of his father. Y’hoshua, as the Son, bears the divine nature of Y’hovah and reveals His heart to humanity. When He healed the sick, forgave sins, and showed compassion to the outcast, He was expressing the very character of His Father.
Y’hoshua Himself said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (Yochanan [John] 14:9, CJB). This is not metaphorical—it is the revelation of divine unity. As the Memra (Aramaic for “Word”) of Y’hovah, He is both distinct in role yet one in essence.
Therefore, when we proclaim “Y’hoshua Ben Y’hovah,” we affirm that the One who walked among us in flesh is the manifestation of the Eternal—Y’hovah who saves. His very name, Y’hoshua, means “Y’hovah is salvation.”
Walking in the Light: Discipleship and Transformation
To follow Y’hoshua is to walk in His light. As talmidim, we are not called to admire the light from a distance but to walk within it. The light exposes our sin, purifies our motives, and renews our hearts. As Yochanan writes, “But if we are walking in the light, as He is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of His Son, Yeshua, purifies us from all sin.” (1 Yochanan [1 John] 1:7, CJB).
Discipleship (talmidut) is therefore a journey from darkness to light. Each commandment obeyed, each act of mercy performed, is a step illuminated by His presence. Just as oil feeds a lamp, so the Ruach HaKodesh fuels our walk, empowering us to shine amid a darkened world.
Y’hoshua said, “You are light for the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Mattityahu [Matthew] 5:14, CJB). Those who follow Him carry His light within them. We reflect His radiance, not our own, so that all may glorify the Father through the Son.
The Light That Cannot Be Overcome
The darkness of this age grows thicker by the day—confusion, rebellion, and deception surround the nations. Yet, as in the beginning, the Word of Y’hovah speaks still: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not suppressed it.” (Yochanan [John] 1:5, CJB).
No power of evil can extinguish the light of Y’hoshua HaMashiach. His Word continues to illuminate hearts, guide the humble, and expose falsehood. He remains the eternal Son of Y’hovah, the Light of the universe, and the hope of all who believe.
May every talmid, every seeker of truth, lift their eyes toward that Light and say with conviction:
“Rabbi Y’hoshua, Son of Y’hovah, shine upon my path,
that I may walk in Your truth and reflect Your light until You come.”
